The cayenne pepper is a type of Capsicum annuum. It is usually a moderately hot chili pepper used to flavor dishes.

When using jalapeño as a reference point, it is about 12 times hotter.

  • Sow the seeds in light, well-drained soil medium and keep in a sunny location at a temperature of at least 60 F. (16 C.) until the seeds sprout in 16-20 days.

    70-DAYS: The color should be a vibrant red and the pods will be anywhere from 2 to 5 inches long. You can pick your cayenne peppers when they are green, though the flavor will be somewhat grassy and the heat not so intense. The pods usually ripen in 70 days.
